Experienced Companion Animal Veterinarian – Surgery Is Your Thing?

Full-Time | East Auckland | $130,000–$170,000 DOE and rostered hours Love surgery? Enjoy a good challenge? Like working with a great team who know their stuff, have a laugh and don’t take themselves too seriously? Then we might just be your kind of clinic!

Pakuranga Vet Clinic & Cattery is a large privately owned practice looking for an experienced vet with strong surgical skills and enthusiasm to tackle or learn more advanced procedures and orthopedics. We’re busy, well-equipped and have a great mix of medical and surgical cases.

We’re looking for someone who genuinely enjoys surgery, has good surgical judgement and is keen to keep developing their skills. There will still be some consulting and medical work to keep things interesting!

A little about us:

We have a strong surgical caseload and plenty of equipment including orthopedic gear to keep you happy. We pride ourselves on high standards of anaesthesia and pain relief protocols with a nursing team that thrive on CPD. We’re lucky to have a fantastic team of experienced vets, diploma-qualified nurses and dedicated reception staff, along with great clients and plenty of insured patients. We’re also passionate about giving back, working with Lonely Miaow to help injured and neglected cats and kittens, and through our own charity, The Rock Vets, providing veterinary care on Niue Island. And just as importantly, we believe work should be enjoyable!

There’s always coffee, plenty of laughs and usually a good supply of treats floating around. We take good veterinary care seriously, but ourselves? Not always!

What we offer:

  • 30-minute medical consultations and 45-minute euthanasia appointments.
  • Two hours of scheduled time on consulting days for breaks, follow-ups, results and clinical admin. Surgical days it is only a rare manic day where required regular breaks are affected.
  • Dedicated note-writing time and AI-assisted note-taking.
  • Flexible working hours with option of 40 hours and 1:5 Saturday mornings or 45 hours with 1:3 Saturday mornings for higher end pay scale.
  • A highly skilled nursing team who actively support vets with diagnostics and treatment
  • A supportive, approachable veterinary owner of 30 years experience who is happy to offer readily available mentorship (without breathing down your neck!)
  • CPD encouraged, full APC coverage and access to VIN and Vet Girl.
  • No Sundays or public holidays.
  • Shared Saturday mornings
  • A staff lounge with reclining chairs. Because sometimes you just need to put your feet up!

Who are we looking for?

Ideally, someone with several years of companion animal experience who:

  • Is a confident and competent surgeon with sound surgical judgement. • Genuinely enjoys surgery and wants it to be a significant part of their working week.
  • Is keen to learn new techniques, develop their skills and occasionally step outside their comfort zone.
  • Enjoys sharing knowledge and mentoring less experienced vets.
  • Can keep a cool head when things get busy.
  • Is reliable, organised, a good communicator and a genuine team player.
  • Cares about patients, clients and colleagues, and appreciates the important role our nursing team plays. We do fire bad clients!
  • Has an interest in CHILL and Fear Free approaches for anxious patients.

You’ll need a current NZ Annual Practising Certificate and appropriate NZ work eligibility.

Sounds like your kind of place? We’re looking for a vet who has the enthusiasm to learn, enjoys being part of a great team and is looking for somewhere to settle in for the long haul.

Start date: Mid to Late January
