Vaccinations

DOGS

Our core vaccines give protection against:

• Distemper virus
• Adenovirus (Infectious Hepatitis & Respiratory infection)
• Parvovirus
• Parainfluenza virus

At Pakuranga Veterinary Clinic we usually vaccinate puppies at 9, 12 and 16 weeks in line with current world guidelines. Boosters are then given annually

Ongoing annual vaccinations are required throughout your dog’s life to maintain adequate levels of immunity.  However as per worldwide standards, not all diseases require annual boosters, so rest assured we do not overvaccinate your pet.

Leptospirosis:

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease. This means it can be transferred to humans. Dogs pick it up from rats urine. As we have seen a few cases here at the clinic we vaccinate all dogs for it. It requires a yearly booster

Canine Infectious Cough (Kennel cough):

• Bordetella bronchiseptica and Parainfluenza virus cause “kennel cough”

We offer an oral and injectable vaccine against kennel cough viruses.  If you dog in insured, goes into a boarding kennel or goes to doggy daycare he will require a Kennel Cough vaccination.

Your puppy is not considered fully covered against the diseases until a week after the final vaccination. While your puppy is unprotected, you will need to be very careful where  you take him/her.

Avoid any public places where unvaccinated dogs may have roamed. Your puppy can be carried in public places, go in the car and attend puppy school. It is also for your puppy to play on private properties with vaccinated dogs – in fact, this is important to do, to help socialise your puppy.

CATS

Our core vaccination offers protection against:

Snuffles/Cat Flu

• Feline Calicivirus
• Rhinotracheitis virus

Feline Parvo

• Feline Panleucopenia virus

Vaccination is usually started when your cat is at least 9 weeks old, and requires an initial 2 vaccinations, 3 to 4 weeks apart.  Up-to-date vaccinations are required for boarding in catteries. This means your cat will require a yearly booster.

We also offer Vaccinations against:

Feline AIDS

• Feline Immunodeficiency Virus  (FIV).

FIV causes a potentially fatal viral disease that interferes with your cat’s immune system. It is transmitted primarily through bite wounds, the virus sheds in the saliva of infected cats. The FIV vaccination starts with a course of three vaccinations 2-4 weeks apart, then is boostered yearly. We offer inhouse FIV testing prior to vaccinating adult cats that have not been previously vaccinated.

Ongoing annual vaccinations are required throughout your cat’s life to maintain adequate levels of immunity.
